Finding the Blessings in the Nightmares

Wow! I guess if I had known the challenges we’d have moving countries I may not have decided it was a good idea after all. But you’ve got to believe that by the end of our 6 months we’ll be so pleased we did it and think “Imagine if we gave up! We would have missed out on so much”

I have tears in my eyes, as it’s hard to picture that day right now, so let’s reflect on the blessings in the challenges to create more happier thoughts….

Challenge:
Our bags missed our second flight
Blessing:
We just made it to our second flight (otherwise we’d be flying the next day)

Challenge:
Fog delayed our airport arrival by 4 hours (sitting in a stationary plane)
Blessing:
My hubby & eldest got to catch up on sleep. I got to catch up on the West Wing and my youngest on Frozen & Peppa Pig respectively.

Challenge:
We missed our 3rd flight by less than an hour, so it meant a 7 hour delay.
Blessing:
We had time to stretch our legs and get fresh air walking around the terminals at LAX, and the girls had time to spread out and play with toys and run around a bit.

Challenge:
Arriving at midnight and leaving airport after 1am
Blessing:
1 of our 7 bags had actually travelled with us which had our washing bag in it, so we had a change of clothes. The airline also gave us a budget to buy clothes to carry us over – warm clothes were definitely needed.

Challenge:
Our bags arrived with 2 damaged laptops; and broken medicine bottle in girls suitcase. So instead of sight seeing on moving day, Andrew was on the phone to the insurance and I was cleaning the girls suitcase items.
Blessing:
Andrew’s laptop still works and I had a double of the medicine that was shattered. (Ever the prepared Mum)

Challenge:
Unfurnished Apartment
Blessing:
A comfy mattress topper is actually comfortable on a floor. We’ve all slept well 3 nights now
Walmart is so affordable we bought many things for $7 including a toaster and an iron.

Challenge:
No heat or hot water
Blessing:
Kiwi ingenuity – I heated 3 bowls of water in the microwave to wash our dishes with. Andrew did the same to shave.

Challenge:
Waste Disposal blocked; no key to open the door for gas guy to turn of gas; bathroom bath/shower rail spontaneously fell.
Blessing:
On-site maintenance guy able to fix.

Challenge:
Washing/Drier to be delivered 4 days after arrival
Blessing:
The guy finished his Monday work early so delivered ours a day early – bless!!!

Challenge:
Dishwasher almost flooded the sink/kitchen – waste disposal blocked again.
Blessing:
I walked by to spot this and am able to call maintenance tomorrow.

Challenge:
My internet from my phone has reached its limit on sharing with Andrew’s laptop, so I can’t release my episode this week.
Blessing:
Officially no work until we get internet connected next week. I guess I’ll be reading, journaling, brainstorming, praying and facebooking instead.

Many times I’ve reached what I thought was my limit and wanted to burst into tears. But here I am again, stopping myself from going down the road of despair in favour of thinking about the blessings we’ve received and hoping and believing we have better days ahead.

Let’s be honest, the homeschooling (2 days) has been great. The girls especially loved the Impromptu Cards for Oral Language this morning. Both had 3 turns and both talked up to 45 seconds – super proud 🙂

Thanks for understanding about the delay,

– Sarah
